While the basics of residential home automation systems are similar to commercial systems, residential systems get much more complex by processes all the systems through a central control processing unit (basically a special computer). With all of your household systems going through a central control unit, this gives the opportunity for different systems to react with each other, thus giving you "home automation". Basically one action will create a chain of events to make your life simpler, more convenient and even save you money from energy efficiency. |
For example, as action of pushing your garage door remote control, will create of reaction of disarming your security system, turning on all or a portion of lights, turning on your TV, closing your curtain/shutters, and many more possibilities. These actions can be initiated by any kind of switch (light switch, doorbell, etc.), sensor (motion, weather, fire, etc.) or timer. And the reactions can be from anything that can be controlled by a switch, motor or remote control which includes but not limited to: HVAC systems, lights, fans, whole house audio, garage doors, door locks, TVs, stereos, fireplaces, fountains, pool covers, pool heaters, hot tubs/spas, motorized windows, driveway heaters, heated floors, curtains/shutters, kitchen appliances, and pet doors. |

Another example, in the morning instead of having to wake up to your normal alarm clock, imagine waking up as music starts to softly play from your in-room speakers and gradually gets louder, your curtains in your room open, and your lights dim on slowly to full power. Elsewhere in your house, your bathroom floor tiles begin to heat up, your coffee begins to brew, curtains throughout the house open, your HVAC systems brings the house to your preferred morning tempature, and the TV you usually watch tunes into your favorite station. Talk about starting the morning off right. As you can see the possibilities are endless. |
